Earth Day 2024: How your office can contribute to a greener future

April 22, 2024

Today is National Earth Day, a day to celebrate our green planet and remember the importance of living sustainably.

This year, EarthDay.org is focused on their commitment to reduce the production of ALL plastics by 60% by 2040. With many of us now back working in offices, here are some things you and your colleagues can do to help towards this goal, and make your office more environmentally friendly.

Make it easy to recycle

It’s important to provide recycling bins so your staff are encouraged to dispose of their waste in the right way. Providing specific bins for papers, plastics, cans and general waste will help your staff recycle with ease and contribute to reducing the production of plastics.

Introduce a plastic-free kitchen

Another way to reduce plastic waste in your office is to stock your kitchens with plenty of mugs, glasses, cutlery and crockery to discourage the use of disposable counterparts. Ensure that there is enough of each for the number of staff you employ, and supply adequate washing up facilities so that they are always washed, dried and stocked back in your cupboard for the next day. To help with this, you can speak to your professional cleaning company about including kitchen cleaning in your contract.

Hire an Eco-Friendly Cleaning Company

Green cleaning relies on low-toxicity chemicals, natural cleaners, products with organic ingredients, as well as biodegradable materials. At Rapid Clean, we use the Triple 8 Dosing System, which is the best on the market for the reduction of single-use plastics, coming in a highly concentrated formula.

We work with our customers who are passionate about reducing the use of chemicals, to find alternative solutions. We are currently trialling plant-based, eco-friendly cleaning products, to ensure the highest standard of cleaning whilst also caring for the environment.

Encourage Cycling

Introducing a cycle-to-work scheme and providing adequate areas for safe storage of push bikes is a great way to encourage employees to swap driving for cycling and reduce harmful emissions. Not only does cycling to work support the environment, but it contributes to employee health and wellbeing. You can find government guidance on implementing a cycle-to-work scheme here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cycle-to-work-scheme-implementation-guidance

Install EV Chargers

For those who do need to drive to work, make electric vehicles a viable option by installing EV chargers and parking spaces for your staff. Knowing they can sufficiently charge their vehicle whilst at work will make it easier for staff members to make the switch from fuel to electric, reducing emissions on the road and helping the environment.
