Over to Jeff….
The weather forecast had predicted heavy rain and high winds at the summit. Not a great start to our adventure! Although my instinct is always to take the more challenging route, the warning of poor visibility, forced us to opt for the ‘easier’ Llanberris path.
A gentle and more importantly, dry start, lulled us into a false sense of security early on. Half an hour in, we even had to remove layers due to the heat! As the climb progressed, we hit rockier terrain and the dark clouds descended….
The ‘rests’ became more frequent as the climb got steeper and the air a little thinner.
And as the pre-packed drinks ran out, we had to rely on the freshwater stream conveniently located halfway up, for hydration!
It took us a total of 3.5 hours to reach the summit and the changeable weather forecast was certainly not wrong! Temperatures dropped by 15 degrees and we were very glad to have had the foresight to take a ruck sack full of woolly hats, gloves and scarves.
The climb down was a whole lot easier and the sun even appeared during our descent. I’m not going to lie, after 6.5 hours of walking, we were pleased to reach the end but felt a huge sense of achievement.
